Gutenberg-Richter’s law in sliding friction of gels

چکیده
We report on experimental studies of spatio-temporally heterogeneous stickslip motions in the sliding friction between a hard polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, plexiglass) block and a soft poly-dimethyl siloxane (PDMS, silicone) gel plate. We perform experiments on two PDMS gels with different viscoelastic properties. For the less viscous gel, large and rapid events are preceded by an alternation of active and less active periods. For the more viscous gel, successive slow slip events take place continuously. The probability distributions of the force drop, a quantity analogous to seismic moment, obey a power law similar to Gutenberg-Richter’s empirical law for the frequency-size statistics of earthquakes, and the exponents of the power law vary with the plate velocity and the viscosity of the gel. We propose a simple model to explain the dependence of the power law exponent on the plate velocity, which agrees with experimental results.

Extreme strain localization and sliding friction in physically associating polymer gels.
Model physically associating gels deformed in shear over a wide range of reduced rates displayed evidence of strain localization. The nonlinear stress responses and inhomogeneous velocity profiles observed during shear rheometry coupled with particle tracking velocimetry were associated with the occurrence of rate-dependent banding and fracture-like responses in the gel. Kinetic friction during dry sliding along atomistic-scale Al 001 /Al 001 and -Al2O3 0001 / -Al2O3 0001 interfaces has been investigated using molecular dynamics MD with recently developed Reactive Force Fields ReaxFF . It is of interest to determine if kinetic friction variations predicted with MD follow the macroscopic-scale friction laws known as Coulomb’s law for dry sliding and Stokes’ fric...
متن کاملStudy on the Friction of Bored Cylindrical Rubber Protrusions Sliding on Ceramic
The present work aims at reducing the friction of rubber soles sliding on ceramic floorings. Fitting bored cylindrical protrusions with different diameters on rubber soles was proposed. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed protrusions in increasing friction coefficient at dry and contaminated floorings. It was found that, at dry sliding, friction coefficient ...
متن کاملSystematic Breakdown of Amontons' Law of Friction for an Elastic Object Locally Obeying Amontons' Law
In many sliding systems consisting of solid object on a solid substrate under dry condition, the friction force does not depend on the apparent contact area and is proportional to the loading force. This behaviour is called Amontons' law and indicates that the friction coefficient, or the ratio of the friction force to the loading force, is constant. Here, however, using numerical and analytica...
متن کاملFriction at the Atomic Scale
Everyone learns the basics of friction in high-school physics classes: the friction force experienced by a sliding object is proportional to the normal force that an object exerts on a surface. Remarkably, this extremely simple and empirical relation, known as Amontons’ Law, is still often used in creating the most technologically sophisticated machines and devices, even though friction is know...
